Gallery Hózhó at Hotel Chaco invites you to the opening of Landings:  All About Place. The wide panoramas and vast skies inspired many artists, including Jacob Frye, Linda Lomahaftewa, David Naranjo, Margarita Paz-Pedro, and Alex Peña. As seen in landscape paintings, drawings, and prints, and in the literal use of the land to form ceramics, New Mexico has spurred creativity in many forms.

Bonus event:
To help celebrate the 100th anniversary of SWAIA’s annual Indian Market, Gallery Hózhó will host a pop-up gallery at Inn at Loretto in Santa Fe. Featuring work from our gallery, we invite you to join us in the Tesuque ballroom to see the beautiful paintings, prints, photographs, drawings, ceramics, and glass by New Mexican artists from Thursday, August 18, through Sunday, August 21, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Liminal Landscapes is a sensual and sensory invitation to explore blurred boundaries among plants, animals, water, and humans through site-specific installations and two-and three-dimensional works by Christie Green, Danielle Rae Miller, Toni Gentilli, and Ken Romig. Featuring Autumn Kioti performing My Strange Heterology ii, a visual, auditory, and performative exploration of environments and identities that are neither here nor there.

Tortuga Gallery is one of four Albuquerque art galleries hosting, Son de Allá y Son de Acá / they are from there, and they are from here. The show features sixty artists representing New Mexico, Texas, California, Arizona, and Colorado. Local artists Santiago Perez and Derrick Montez are highlighted at Tortuga. The project aims to bridge art communities, expanding our understanding socially, culturally, and historically between artists across state borders.


President's Award: Honoring Roy Sumner Johnson

Roy Sumner Johnson, owner and director of Sumner & Dene, has been in the art business for 43 years. He has owned galleries in Taos, Santa Fe, San Diego, and Albuquerque. He was the founding president of the Taos Spring Arts Celebration, Director of the Santa Fe Festival of the Arts, and founding Executive Director of Magnifico! Albuquerque Festival of the Arts. He taught a college course for 10 years “The Business of Art” teaching artists how to make a living creating art and working in the arts. He has served on the boards of the Albuquerque Little Theatre, Art in the Schools, Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau (Visit Albuquerque), New Mexico Science Olympiad, Santa Fe Gallery Association, and is the past chair of the Albuquerque Downtown action team.

Roy created the give your love art fundraiser for the New Mexico Aids Services and was the host of the Little Houses Art Auction Benefiting Offcenter. During his tenure with the Albuquerque Art Business Association, Roy was the founder of the Local Treasures Program, served as Treasurer & Vice President, and led the charge on the Albuquerque Art Showcase.

Roy holds a BFA from the University of San Francisco with a degree in advertising and illustration from the San Francisco Academy of Art. He also holds a self proclaimed Masters Degree in gift wrapping. At the end of 2022, Roy is retiring and selling Sumner & Dene Art Gallery. He will be missed.
