She received a masters degree in Art education in 1996 including 23 semesters of Arita Method of Porcelain. She was selected by Professor Jim Srubek and Manji Inoue, an important cultural National Living Treasure from Japan, to teach at UNM and maintain the International relationship with Arita, Japan in ceramic arts. Despite obstacles and challenges to continuing these studies at UNM, she is a part-time faculty in the Art Education Program and liaison with Manji Inoue. She has traveled to Arita three times during the past 20 years and in 2004 she lead 10 of her students as guests of Manji Inoue. She recalls the final approach of the plane over New Mexico after months of study in Japan, looking out over the land and the color of the light below and how ‘there is no more beautiful place to make pottery’. This is the only Arita program that exists in the United States. It is itself a Local Treasure that should be preserved.
