Harwood Art Center presents I HAVE A QUESTION and there’s no one left to answer it. The exhibition was birthed more than a year ago when Harriette Tsosie and Evey Jones discovered they had both inherited precious journals, diaries, and love letters from their ancestors: Jones, her mother’s travel journals, and Tsosie her paternal grandmother’s diaries (1900 – 1968) and grandparents’ love letters (1906 – 1911). Jones opted for a non literal, abstract response to the theme, while Tsosie incorporated actual text and photographs for part of her exhibition and then responded with a series of three dimensional boxes, some representing family secrets.

Artscrawl Reception: 5-8pm
Matrix presents Likely Stories-Paintings by Laura Wacha. Laura Wacha’s paintings tell stories that linger in the mind like an unanswered question. Her work is full of cartoon-like creatures on brightly patterned backgrounds that leave an impression that brings one to go back to a piece multiple times. Wacha’s images are of the domestically mundane and globally tragic or vice versa. The creatures in her paintings are fantastical; they are reminiscent of science fiction characters in unusual situations and places. The compositions of Wacha’s pieces give the viewer an opportunity to “fill in the blanks”, so to speak, and create their own story based on their life experiences.

New Grounds brings us Transitations-Gravure and Monotypes by Adabel Allen. As a printmaker and photographer, Adabel Allen creates images inspired from her dialogue and encounters with birds and nature. Paralleling the natural world’s tendencies with her own is crucial to storytelling in her work – using birds and nature as symbols and metaphors for the transformation, transition and transience she is experiencing in life. Utilizing the camera to capture fleeting moments in nature plays an important role in how Allen created this body of work. This “Transitational” period is an exploration of self, relationships and the environment. “Feeling like a forest having been burnt to the ground, sprouting with new life”, Allen gives us a glimpse into her experiences of life through nature.

Mixed Influences is a solo exhibit of Marcia Truell Newren’s kiln worked glass. Marcia Truell Newren holds an MA in anthropology from the University of Colorado, specializing in prehistoric architecture, and was involved in archaeological excavations in the United States, Canada and Mexico. For eight years, she was the studio assistant to an internationally recognized glass sculptor. In 1996 and 1998, she attended Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington, and in 1999, studied at the studio of the Corning Glass Museum in Corning, New York. She has taken classes in studio arts, and Art History at the University of New Mexico: and in lithography at La Corta della Miniera near Urbino, Italy. In 1999, she was nominated for the Corning Award through Pilchuck Glass School. Newren, states, “The distinctive cultures of the world often develop in isolation but become diluted with external contact which blurs boundaries. Being fluid, they change. By extension, these mixed influences and collisions cannot help but be mirrored in the work of those seeking any form of expression which pushes beyond sheer mimicry.”

Wright’s Indian Art
2677 Louisiana NE – 266.0120 – wrightsgallery.com

Wright’s Indian Art announces its new location and 106th Anniversary! The celebration includes an Outdoor Art Show, Special Exhibits and Performances And an Auction to Benefit First Nations Community HealthSource (Albuquerque, NM) — Wright’s Collection of Indian Art, the oldest continuously operating Indian art gallery in Albuquerque, will commemorate its newest location and 106th anniversary with a festive celebration on Mother’s Day weekend, May 11-12, 2013

When Wright’s opened in 1907, the New Mexico territory had a population of just 327,000 and was still five years from statehood. Sheep farming was the territory’s most lucrative industry. A young adventurer named Charles Wright, who had been working for the Fred Harvey Company, left the hotel chain to open his own business: Wright’s Trading Post and Curios. It was headquartered downtown in a landmark adobe pueblo-style building at 4th Street and Gold Avenue.

As Albuquerque has evolved from dusty frontier town to cosmopolitan city, Wright’s has changed with it, from a rustic trading post to its new, sophisticated gallery. Over the years, Wright’s has represented the most significant Native American artists of its day, from Pablita Velarde and Maria Martinez to today’s multiple award-winning artists such as Jennifer Curtis, Caroline Carpio, Alfred Joe, Joe & Althea Cajero, Cliff Fragua and many, many more.

Remarkably, the business has remained in the hands of just two families — the Wrights and the Chernoffs. “We’ve lasted 100 years by representing the best of the Native American community — and our upcoming art market is our way of thanking our artists and our customers,” says gallery director Wayne A. Bobrick.

The celebration will kick off on Saturday, May 11, at 10 am, with a ceremonial blessing by a Native medicine man and a ribbon cutting. Over the weekend, there will be flute playing by sculptor/musician Adrian Wall, dancing by World Champion Hoop Dancer Nakotah LaRance – recently returned from Cirque de Soleil, an informal fashion show by Navajo designer Penny Singer, and more.

Outside in the parking area, booths will be set up for an Indian Artist Market, where the public can meet and buy directly from dozens of leading artists in various media. A few who have confirmed their presence are jewelers Arland Ben (Navajo), Jennifer Curtis (Navajo), Marian Denipah (Navajo), Don Dewa (Zuni), Michael NaNaPing Garcia(Pascua Yaqui), Tommy Jackson (Navajo), Al Joe (Navajo), Steve LaRance (Hopi), Eric Othole (Zuni/Cochiti), Myron Panteah (Zuni), Lyndon Tsosie (Navajo), and Leo Yazzie (Navajo); Zuni fetish carvers Lena Boone and Herbert Him; potters Caroline Elliot (Santa Clara), Glendora Fragua (Jemez), Jennifer Moquino (Santa Clara),Bernice Naranjo (Santa Clara), Dusty Naranjo (Santa Clara), Wallace Nez (Navajo), Dominique Toya (Jemez), Maxine Toya (Jemez), and Kathleen Wall (Jemez); painters Silvester Hustito (Zuni), Ben Nelson (Navajo), Bennie Yellowman Nelson (Navajo), Chris Peshlakai (Navajo) and Alice Yazzie (Navajo); and sculptors Adrian Wall (Jemez) and Kathy Elk Woman Whitman (Mandan, Hidatsa & Arikara).

Indoors, to honor all of the Native artists who have supported Wright’s over the years, a Silent Auction with a wonderful variety of items will raise money for First Nations Community Healthsource, a nonprofit organization that serves the local urban Native population as well as other underserved populations, such as the homeless. First Nations integrates a wide range of services – primary care, dental, substance abuse prevention, behavioral health, diabetes prevention, social services and more – with traditional values to enhance the physical, spiritual and mental well-being of its patients.

Also indoors: a trunk show of vintage jewelry and fetishes by Southwest Zuni Connections, a very special appearance by Navajo master jewelers Carl & Irene Clark, with their legendary micro-mosaic jewelry, and artist demonstrations by Maxine & Dominique Toya (pottery), and Alice Yazzie (pastels).

Wright’s Indian Art currently offers a vast array of American Indian jewelry, pottery, paintings, sculpture, fetishes, kachinas, folk art, masks, and textiles. Every single item is handmade, and selected with rigorous standards. Says Bobrick, “Indian art has evolved; what hasn’t changed is the trust inspired by the honesty of our dealings with both artists and collectors.”

High Desert Art & Frame presents Please Do Touch The Artwork: Textured Works by Tara Miller. Tara Miller says, “Please DO touch the artwork. Texture is my thing. It evokes the sense of thought and the feeling of touch. I strive to create a lot of dimension in my work. Most pieces have a 3D effect. If you have the urge to reach out and touch one of my pieces, then I feel I have succeeded in my artistic quest. Often there is no focal point because the whole piece is the main attraction. Look from afar, then up close, revealing an entirely different world and seeing new layers and dimensions.”

The exhibit consists of three of the artist’s eleven sections of work; the “Inner Child Series”, the “Sacred Earth (Geode) Series” and the “Wound Series.” All the artworks in these (and Marlene’s other) series manifest in different and often challenging ways with the artist’s drive not only to transform her material, but to do so to achieve a level of what might be called iconoclastic and holy ennoblement. Stop in to see this magnificent show.

The purpose of doing this is to generate an image that is so large that it will be very sharp in large format prints, some up to ten feet across.

Andy Moerlein: Identifying Birds & Relationships. Please welcome New Hampshire sculptor Andy Moerlein as he makes his solo show debut in New Mexico. This show features Moerlein’s ceramic birds, wood sculpture and prints. Moerlein’s work has a storyteller’s attitude – that tightrope walk between naturalism and symbolism. Ceramic birds fill branches and stones with a communication that is evident yet ambivalent. Some snuggle together; others turn their backs to each other. The birds seem ordinary – an embodiment of stillness – frozen in place. Yet each conveys a gesture that implies movement. These birds are prone to startle and fly at any moment. Moerlein’s birds are a mix of authentic and exceptional. Real feathers festoon the rather generic small birds. Wood “stones” and complex branches complete a scene that suggests the interruption of an event. “My birds are steeped in presence. I express my human story with small birds as my actors.”The prints selected to hang with this show are similarly avian predicaments. The birds are often familiar, some even authentic in colors and pose, but they have an attitude that suggests dialogue. There is no doubt that Moerlein has observed birds closely, but the images suggest his focus is on human relationships.

Likely Stories- Paintings by Laura Wacha. Show runs through May 25.

Transitations – Gravure and Monotypes by Adabel Allen
As a printmaker and photographer, Adabel Allen creates images inspired from her dialogue and encounters with birds and nature. Paralleling the natural world’s tendencies with her own is crucial to storytelling in her work – using birds and nature as symbols and metaphors for the transformation, transition and transience she is experiencing in life. Utilizing the camera to capture fleeting moments in nature plays a major role in how Allen created this body of work. This “Transitational” period is an exploration of self, relationships and the environment. “Feeling like a forest having been burnt to the ground, sprouting with new life”, Allen gives us a glimpse into her experiences of life through nature. The show runs through May 25.
