Albuquerque’s only library until 1948, located at the corner of Edith and Central NE, is now a Special Collections Library housing geneoloy and research materials. It replaced an 1890 brick schoolhouse that served as the city's library beginning in 1901 and served as its main library until 1975. . The original 1925 portion of the building, designed by Arthur Rossiter, is an excellent example of "Spanish-Pueblo Revival" architecture. Famous Taos artist Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) painted the decorations on the interior walls and posts. The belfry over the porch holds the cast iron bell from the old schoolhouse.
