Emerging Creatives was originally a collaboration between Creative Albuquerque and AABA – providing exhibition space and professional development for artists who are ready for the next step in their career – gallery representation. After a brief hiatus, the program has returned to The Harwood Art Center, in partnership with AABA.

“SURFACE: Emerging Artists of New Mexico” is dedicated to cultivating the creative and professional growth of artistic talents and to expanding their visibility in our community.

Applications are due Friday, March 31, 2013. Apply now. There is $10 fee to apply; all collected fees are allocated to replenishing Harwood’s endowed cash awards for the program.

“SURFACE: Emerging Artists of New Mexico” (June 2013) is open to individuals working in any media and from diverse creative fields, including drawing, painting, printmaking, jewelry making, fashion, design, architecture, digital media, etc. We encourage submission of new and/or experimental works. Harwood and AABA take a broad approach to “emerging artist,” and applicants are asked to self identify with this description. Applicants must be living, working and/or studying in New Mexico.

Exhibition, Reception & Workshop

“SURFACE: Emerging Artists of New Mexico” will enjoy a one month exhibition in Harwood Art Center’s Main Gallery in June 2013. Harwood and AABA will host an opening reception as part of the citywide First Friday ArtsCrawl on June 7, 2013.

“SURFACE” artists will participate in a day-long professional development workshop on Saturday, June 8, 2013. Workshop sessions will be led by professional artists, gallerists, public relations / communications specialists and local media and will focus on refining your artist statement / written materials, developing a web presence, promotion and audience cultivation, as well as a group walkthrough and critique. The workshop will close with a special private gathering for New Mexico galleries, curators, consultants and “SURFACE” artists.

Attendance at both the opening reception and the professional development workshop is required for all selected artists.

Those accepted to participate in SURFACE become eligible for commercial gallery exhibitions, merchandise opportunities and Harwood Art Center’s endowed cash awards (ranging from $250 – $500).
